ASKED QUESTIONS

1- What type of furniture does the Non-Useless Furniture Studio create?
We create functional, sleek contemporary furniture with an original, and sometimes funky design.

2- Why so much extravagance?
For the pleasure of redefining day-to-day life, and so that the owner can show off his or her own fancy.

3- What does non-useless mean?
We have decided to explore the vast field of functionality. We have chosen this name because our creations are useful in day-to-day life. The pieces of furniture fulfil a specific use, as each shape has been optimally designed with a specific function in mind.

For example, the “to dissimulate the pyjamas” piece, with its soft, sensual, body-like shape that almost looks like bedding, is ideal for putting away intimate apparel without having to fold it. We could not imagine using the piece for mail or photos because it is simply meant for more delicate items.

Distinctive, the pieces embody both the owner’s taste as well as his or her personality: the person who loves glasses, who carries everything and anything in his or her pockets; the person for whom the bedroom is the most important room in the house. Each person can also find a way to make the most of the unique features of each piece. This is how we came up with the idea of using the “to distribute the thingummies” piece for shooters or spice bottles; and using the “to place the glasses” piece to empty pockets.

4- For whom are these pieces made?
Our pieces are for people who love contemporary designer furniture. The 2005 collection can be integrated into many different decors, as each is the same size as any piece of occasional furniture, and can be viewed as a work of art.

5- Why think up new functions?
Because we believe that there is a lot of ground to cover in the vast field of functionality. Exploring these new functions is what drives us.

6- What inspired these creations?
Our inspiration comes from the little things we do everyday. We have focussed on simple gestures and we have tried to translate them into our pieces.

At one time or another, we have each wondered about where to put a screw, a rubber band, a pen, a penny, or a button. And we always end up putting it somewhere that we are somehow unable to recall afterwards! When Jean comes home from work, he always empties his pockets on the nearest piece of furniture or into a vase. This is how the idea behind the “to distribute the thingummies” piece was born.

7- Are the pieces mass-produced or is each unique?
The pieces are made according to the demand, in small quantities. All seven models can be viewed on the Internet, at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in April 2005, as well as at the New York International Contemporary Furniture Fair in May 2005.

In addition, we offer a wide variety of garments to personalize the pieces. They are also produced in small quantities or can be custom-made upon request. These garments can also be viewed on the Internet.

8- What type of material do you use to make the pieces?
We use maple wood, and glass or metal depending on the model. The stuffed and padded pieces are covered with linen garments.

9- I need a specific piece of furniture for my decor.
Can the Studio create something for a particular function?

We do not custom make pieces. We prefer to be guided by our own inspiration. But if someone comes to us with an idea for a new function, we may consider it when designing a new model for the collection.

10- Are the garments created for specific models?
No, except for the stuffed or padded pieces. All the garments, tights, belts and skirts are interchangeable.

11- Can the pieces be shipped to anywhere in the world?
Of course. Obviously, the cost of shipping and handling will differ depending on the destination.

12- How long does it take to make a piece?
Production takes between 6 and 12 weeks.
